The Challenge

Today’s skincare platforms often:

  • Offer too many product choices with too little guidance

  • Use inconsistent ingredient language

  • Make it hard to build a skincare routine with confidence

This creates frustration, especially for new or time-starved users who want to care for their skin but feel overwhelmed.

Design Goals

  • Reduce friction in ingredient understanding

  • Personalize product filtering and suggestions

  • Support intuitive routine-building

  • Design for emotional calm, not just conversion

Research & Insights

Methods
  • 8 qualitative user interviews (ages 22–38)

  • 60+ responses to skincare frustration survey

  • UX/brand analysis of Sephora, INCI Decoder, The Ordinary

Key Findings
  • Ingredient labels were hard to understand

  • Users built routines through trial-and-error

  • Filters rarely reflected real concerns like “balance oiliness” or “soothe redness”

Persona:
Melis (27)
Busy marketing professional with sensitive skin. She wants clear explanations, a routine that fits her lifestyle, and trust in what she’s buying — without needing to be an expert.

Design Process

1.Problem Framing
  • Transparency, personalization, and simplicity were central challenges.

2.Feature Prioritization
  • Used MoSCoW method to define MVP:

    • Smart filters

    • Ingredient education

    • Routine builder

3.Information Architecture
  • Sitemap with clear areas:

    • Shop

    • My Routine

    • Learn

    • My Skin Profile

4.Wireframes & User Flows
  • Low-fidelity screens for:

    • Onboarding → skin profile setup

    • Shop → smart filters

    • Learn → ingredient modals

    • Routine builder → morning/evening flows

5.Visual & Brand Design
  • Brand focused on calm and clarity

  • Neutral, natural tones

  • Clean UI, generous spacing, soft rounded edges

Key Features

Ingredient Education
  • Tap-to-expand cards with plain-language definitions

  • Shows benefits, sensitivities, and skin compatibility

  • Educates in context, not in bulk

Personalized Product Filtering
  • Filters based on:

    • Skin type (e.g. oily, combination)

    • Skin goals (e.g. brighten, soothe, anti-aging)

    • Ingredient sensitivities (e.g. avoid fragrance)

Routine Builder
  • Drag-and-drop step organization (AM/PM)

  • Auto-suggests compatible products

  • Flags incompatible ingredients

Mobile-First, Emotionally Calm UI
  • Edge-to-edge cards

  • Focused product views

  • Visual language that promotes trust, not urgency

Outcome & Impact

Although a conceptual project, Laurea shows how thoughtful UX can bridge:

  • Education + Commerce

  • Emotion + Interaction

  • Confidence + Simplicity

In today’s world, we’re always connected but rarely balanced. The Circadian Protocol is a speculative AR concept designed to reflect emotional states through ambient cues, rather than alerts. Instead of demanding attention, it listens quietly to biometric signals and responds with visual metaphors, encouraging self-awareness and presence.
